Bimah Cover

Abstract

This a woven cream colored bimah cover with gold threads as part of the weave. Embroidered letters in English on the front. There are two snaps in the middle of the cover. Strips of embroidery form a Star of David in the center of the cover. A bimah (among Ashkenazim) or tebah (among Sephardim) is the elevated area or platform in a Jewish synagogue which is intended to serve the place where the person reading aloud from the Torah stands during the Torah reading service.

Abstract

Blue velvet brocade Bimah curtain and valance for the Ark. Embroidered in gold threads and sequins on the curtain is a crown, two lions, Hebrew letters standing for ''the crown of the Torah,'' and the Ten Commandments in Hebrew between the lions. A Star of David and a vine with flowers are also embroidered on the curtain. Embroidered on the valance are two Star of Davids and a vase with wheat. Both the curtain and the valance have gold colored trim and fringe.

Abstract

A blue velvet tefillin (pylacteries) bag. This view shows the front side with a wheat colored Star of David stitched with simple running stitches. A drawstring runs through the mouth of the bag, consisting of brown cotton and blue wool interwoven strings. Originally belonged to Ira M. Beck.

Brown Velvet Tefillin Bag, circa 1900

Abstract

A brown velvet tefillin (phylacteries) bag with embroidery on the front and back. One side has red, yellow, blue, and green chain and buttonhole stitched flowers. The second side is embroidered with running and back stitches to form a Star of David with flowers in each of the triangles. There is a monogram in the center of the star. The drawstring closure is a red grosgrain ribbon stitched on by hand with blue embroidery floss. Originally belonged to the Kern Family.

Abstract

A wine colored velvet prayer shawl (tallit - Sephardic pronunciation, tallis - Ashkenazic pronunciation) bag. Inside is lined with gray cotton fabric. The top folds down to close, but there is no clasp or drawstring. The front embroidery has two golden lions, Keter Elyon, Star of David and ''tallit'' (in Hebrew) under the star. Gold and off-white flowers are embroidered on the front as well. Originally belonged to Max Rosenthal.

Abstract

A velvet burnt orange tefillin (phylacteries) bag with off-white cotton inner lining. A hand-embroidered Star of David on front of the bag with ''tefillin'' (in Hebrew) written inside the star are embroidered in dark yellow on the front of the bag. Underneath the star is a blue embroidered laurel and another dark yellow embroidered flower. There is gold fringe at the bottom front of the bag. Originally belonged to Max Rosenthal.
